Spiritual Steps on the Road to Success eBook Linda Seger
I own many of the books that Linda Seger has written, but I wasn't quite sure what I was getting into when I bought this one. I am a Christian who writes and teaches, and I can't tell you how many times I have questioned what I am doing, who I am, and what my purpose is? I've had this book for a while but had not worked up the energy to read it until lately when I've felt really down and depressed. Seger's insights have a way of peeling back your shell and causing you to look into your soul, which is exactly what i have needed to do for a long time, but wasn't ready for until now. I am thankful that I am now taking Seger's book along with me. I don't feel so lonely and lost.Product details

Spiritual Steps on the Road to Success eBook Linda Seger Reviews
Christians have the potential to influence others and impact the world through their careers. But expressing God's goodness through work presents many challenges. “That is what this book explores, “Seger writes,” the spiritual challenges we meet when we want God in the center of our professional lives.” (xxiii)
She has divided the book into three parts. She writes about getting started on the journey, when we are on our way, and when we've achieved our dream. She interviewed many people to gain insights from their lives. She gives many examples from her own life and the lives of others, from movie stars to Billy Graham. She also uses some stories from the Bible.
The part of the book I liked the best was the second, on our way. She helps us understand the obstacles we meet. I really liked her section on the seven deadly sins, tempting because of how the world defines success. She has other good insights too, such as web thinking, connecting instead of competing. She encourages readers to recognize evil and has a strategy for confronting it. She also helps us to think of who we are to be, not just what we are to be doing.
This is a good book for someone wanting to identify their calling. It's also good for those who desire to maintain integrity in the workplace. It is also good for those wanting to understand how their spirituality relates to their profession and life. There are lots of questions for discussion at the end of each chapter so the book could be used in a group setting.
Seger is a Quaker and sees herself as a bridge between spiritual disciplines. Evangelical Christians may have some difficulty with some of what Seger writes, considering Christianity to be one path to God among many.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through The Book Club Network. My comments are an independent and honest review.
I can remember when I was little all I could think about was growing up to be a teacher. I loved to learn and was always intrigued by the teachers. I thought they were so smart and I wanted to be just like them. Now that I am older I wonder if I really considered what my calling was? Did I get it right? Do I feel like I succeeded in life? I loved when the author said, " we can best find out what we're meant to do when we grow up by looking at what we loved to do when we were young." The two things I loved as a child were reading and wanting to teach. I was a librarian for fifteen years and loved every minute I was at the library. I wasn't the "traditional" teacher in a classroom but I have been a Children's Pastor for many years. My vision was much smaller than God's. I had the honor of teaching many children each Sunday.
In the book the author shares many testimonies from businessmen to actors of how they recognized their calling in life. I did like the example Denzil Washington shared. He says, "I understand that what I've been blessed to do is a part of God's plan." He starts and ends each day with prayer. When you know without a doubt what your calling is, you want to honor God as you walk in your destiny. We sometimes rush into something thinking this is exactly what I'm called to do. However we may not have heard correctly and it could be our flesh rushing in the wrong direction. The hardest thing to do is wait. We need to sit quietly, listen to His voice and He will direct us. To have patience is never easy.
The book really made me take a second look at other jobs that people have. They may not think they have important jobs, but what would we do if there was no one to wait on us at a fast food restaurant or the customer service person at a store eagerly willing to solve our problem. Each job is important and brings different things to help each other. I appreciate the warm smile as I'm getting checked out at the grocery store or a greeting from the teller at the bank.
Each chapter discusses a topic that is explained with examples and at the end of each chapter is questions which I really enjoyed and scriptures to look up . It helped me understand the chapter better and gave me a deeper sense of the subject. One of the chapters I really enjoyed was on the Seven Deadly Sins. They sure try to sneak in when we are successful and "although they'll be happy to play with anyone, they particularly love those with power." Which deadly sin would you have the most trouble with? I found the chapter to be powerful and inspiring.
Overall the book is very well written and is a great tool to use as you find your calling and become successful. I did think about the word successful the entire time I read the book. For me, my success is that I never gave up, I went through trials, and I'm happy with the things I achieved while working as a librarian and Children's pastor.
"We are out in this earth partly to help people and things grow. We prepare the soil, we plant our seeds , we hope we are in tune with the Holy Spirit and that the Light comes to nurture our work. "

I haven't had a chance to get very far in this book, but I'm enjoying it so far.
Linda Seger knows people. She offers wonderful insights for writers and other artists interested in breaking into various aspects of the entertainment industry. This books gives practical resources for protecting yourself against the darkness and harshes that can often accompany such work. If you're looking to break into the industry, and you want to stay grounded, positive, joyful and fulfilled - this book is a great start!
As a screenwriter for 42 years I was drawn to this book because for years I have known and benefited immensely from Linda Seger's books on screenwriting. But I've also been a Christian for 34 years, so this came as a double whammy. I would have liked to have had this book in my hands all those years ago when I was first converted. Dr Seger is steeped in the Bible, has a great talent for clear exposition and the book is full of wisdom. For people in my industry the section on Pride and the final chapter on Becoming Unimportant have particular relevance. I well remember early on in my journey praying to have my ego removed because it was wrecking my life and my career. I once shared a meal with Dr Seger in an LA restaurant named Chez Helene. She will probably have forgotten that, but I never will. Tony Morphett
